Personnel of the Anambra State Police Command have rescued an unidentified elderly man who collapsed beside Dozzy Filling Station along the Onitsha-Owerri Road in the Okpoko area of the state.
The incident reportedly slowed vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the ever-busy highway, prompting commuters on the route to witness an unusual scene.
It was gathered that the man remained on the roadside until personnel of the Anambra State Police Command arrived at the scene and assisted in taking him to the hospital.
A shop owner near the scene, who was present when the incident occurred, said people were afraid to go near the victim because they could not ascertain the circumstances that led to his collapse.
He added that some people feared the unconscious man might have been under one influence or another.
However, in a statement issued on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said police operatives attached to the Okpoko Division, while on routine foot patrol, found the yet-to-be-identified man lying unconscious and immediately rushed him to the hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.
Ikenga urged family members of the man or members of the public with useful information to report to the Okpoko Police Division or contact the nearest police station.
He said, “The Anambra State Police Command has continued to demonstrate its commitment to protecting lives and showing compassion to members of the public.
“This follows the rescue of an unconscious male pedestrian beside Dozzy Filling Station along the Onitsha/Owerri Road, Okpoko.
“Police operatives attached to Okpoko Division, while on routine foot patrol, found the yet-to-be-identified aged man lying unconscious and immediately rushed him to the hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.
“The Command is concerned about the condition of the victim and urges members of the public who may have useful information regarding his identity, family, or residence to report to the Okpoko Police Division or contact the Command for necessary action.”
In a related development, the command also fulfilled its promise made during activities marking the National Police Day celebration by paying the second-term school fees of five pupils who distinguished themselves academically in their respective classes.
According to Ikenga, the gesture is aimed at encouraging excellence, supporting education, and promoting nation-building in Anambra State.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, noted that the Police remain committed not only to maintaining law and order but also to supporting initiatives that positively impact the lives of Ndi Anambra, especially the younger generation.
“The Command therefore reassures residents of its resolve to continue to combine effective policing with people-oriented programmes that foster trust, compassion, and community development,” the statement added.
