The All Progressives Congress in Enugu State on Tuesday declared Senator Osita Ngwu, Senator Kelvin Chukwu, and Chief Ikeje Asogwa winners of the party’s senatorial primary elections ahead of the 2027 National Assembly polls.
The results of the primaries conducted on Monday across the state were announced at the APC State Secretariat in Enugu by the Chairman of the APC National Assembly Primary Elections Committee for Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Solomon Funkekeme.
Funkekeme commended party members for the peaceful conduct of the exercise, describing the primaries as orderly across the state.
“We’re satisfied with the conduct of the members of the party. The whole exercise went peacefully,” he said.
He also praised Governor Peter Mbah for providing what he described as an enabling environment for the conduct of the elections and commended the APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Dr. Ben Nwoye, for his role in ensuring the success of the process.
“I commend the governor, Peter Mbah, for providing the enabling ground for this peaceful election. I also commend the APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Ben Nwoye, for his efforts, as well as members of the party in the state for conducting themselves in an orderly and peaceful manner,” Funkekeme stated.
Announcing the results, Funkekeme declared Ngwu winner of the Enugu West Senatorial District primary after polling 70,015 votes.
In Enugu East Senatorial District, Kelvin Chukwu defeated Nnaji Shalom Nwakaego after securing 111,743 votes against Nwakaego’s 482 votes.
For the Enugu North Senatorial District primary, Chief Ikeje Asogwa emerged winner after polling 125,089 votes out of the 152,886 registered party members in the district.
Other contestants in the Enugu North race included Dr. Ugo Ugwuanyi, who polled 736 votes; Chinazo Eze, who secured 782 votes; and Princess Edith Ugwuanyi, who got 876 votes.
Speaking during the declaration ceremony, the APC State Chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, said the exercise marked the conclusion of the senatorial primary process, which began in the 260 wards across the state on Monday.
“We have come today to finalise what we started yesterday in the 260 wards for the senatorial election. Today, they’ve come to announce the results,” he said.
Chukwunweike disclosed that the same committee that conducted the House of Representatives primaries also supervised the senatorial primaries.
He added that the State House of Assembly primaries would hold on Wednesday, while the governorship and presidential primaries were scheduled for Thursday and Friday respectively.
Speaking on behalf of the successful candidates, Ngwu thanked party leaders and members for their support and confidence.
He also commended Mbah for promoting unity and stability within the APC in Enugu State.
“I wish to respectfully thank Governor Peter Mbah for his commitment to the unity, stability and progress of the APC in Enugu State. His leadership and dedication to ensuring a peaceful process have greatly strengthened the confidence of our members in the party,” Ngwu said.
The senator called on other aspirants and their supporters to work together for the success of the party in the 2027 general elections.
“Elections and primaries may come with competition, but at the end of the day, we remain members of one political family with a shared vision for the advancement of Enugu State and Nigeria,” he stated.
Ngwu added that the party would campaign on the achievements of Mbah’s administration ahead of the elections.
“We are definitely leaning on the performance of Governor Peter Mbah to campaign, and we’re doing that with pride because he has worked,” he added.
