The Bundesliga season concluded on Saturday, bringing an end to Victor Boniface’s loan spell at Werder Bremen, with the club confirming the Nigerian striker will not remain in Germany and will return to parent side Bayer Leverkusen, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Bremen’s campaign ended with a 2-0 home defeat to Borussia Dortmund on the final day, but they still secured top-flight survival as the season’s concluding fixtures determined both relegation and European qualification outcomes across the league.
Boniface, however, endured a difficult spell at the club and failed to score in 11 appearances, struggling to make an impact in a season disrupted by injury and fitness concerns.
German outlet Kicker reported that the striker’s time at the club has come to an end following an underwhelming loan spell.
“Boniface has no future at Werder Bremen,” the publication reported.
“Boniface does not have a future at Werder Bremen. The striker will initially return to his parent club, Bayer Leverkusen, after an unsuccessful loan spell in which he failed to score in 11 appearances.”
The forward last played for Bremen in December before undergoing knee surgery that kept him sidelined for an extended period.
He later returned to the squad after rehabilitation, but reports indicated he was not in ideal physical condition, further limiting his involvement.
The past year has been particularly challenging for the Nigerian international, who came close to joining AC Milan last summer before the move collapsed at the final stage after he failed a medical.
Bayer Leverkusen, who had already deemed him surplus to requirements, subsequently sanctioned his loan move to Bremen in search of regular minutes and a return to form.
Boniface is now expected to return to Leverkusen, where he remains under contract for two more years, as he attempts to rebuild his standing at the club.
Following confirmation of his departure on Saturday, the striker expressed gratitude to Bremen supporters, staff and teammates on social media platform X.
“Wow. Crazy season for me, a lot has happened. Just want to say thank you very much to fans and staff and players,” he wrote.
His future remains uncertain heading into the new campaign, with the forward needing to rediscover the form that once made him a key figure in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga-winning side, as he looks to convince the club’s coaching staff of his long-term value.
