Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has called on Liverpool to return to the “heavy metal” style of football that defined the club under former manager Jürgen Klopp after their damaging 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa.
Liverpool’s latest loss left their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League hanging in the balance and increased frustration among supporters following a disappointing campaign.
Salah, who is set to leave Anfield at the end of the season after nine years at the club, expressed his disappointment in a strongly worded social media post.
As reported by BBC Sport on Saturday, Salah said, “Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve,” Salah wrote.
“I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies.”
The Egyptian forward appeared to question the club’s direction under current head coach Arne Slot by insisting Liverpool’s traditional identity must not change.
“That is the football I know how to play, and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good,” he added.
“It cannot be negotiable, and everyone who joins this club should adapt to it.”
Salah also reflected on his successful spell at Liverpool, where he helped the club win multiple major trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League.
“I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions,” he said.
“It took hard work, and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that.”
The 33-year-old insisted Liverpool’s standards should remain much higher despite a difficult season.
“Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games,” Salah said.
“As I’ve always said, qualifying for next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum, and I will do everything I can to make that happen.”
Liverpool’s defeat at Villa Park was their 19th of the season, with some travelling supporters leaving before the final whistle as pressure continues to grow on Slot ahead of the summer transfer window.
