Sevilla head coach Luis García has described Nigerian forward Akor Adams as phenomenal after the striker scored the match-winning goal in a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica on Wednesday night.
Adams delivered another decisive moment for the Andalusian side, rifling a powerful left-footed strike past goalkeeper Arnau Tenas at the near post after combining with Djibril Sow inside the penalty area 18 minutes from time to complete a remarkable turnaround.
“Akor, now Akor again, is phenomenal,” García said after the game.
“Well, I hope I understand myself and, damn, what a tough guy and all. Maybe it’s not done yet. Until it’s done, I’m not going to relax for a second. Not a second.”
It was Adams’ fourth match-winning goal of the season, having previously settled encounters against Rayo Vallecano, Athletic Bilbao and RCD Espanyol.
Sevilla had entered the night only a point above the relegation zone and fell behind after 13 minutes when Georges Mikautadze set up Gerard Moreno to finish calmly into the bottom corner. The hosts then doubled their lead in the 20th minute as Mikautadze tapped home a cross from Alberto Moleiro.
Sevilla fought back through Oso, who finished brilliantly in the 36th minute after latching onto Lucien Agoumé’s diagonal pass, before Rubén Vargas cut the ball back for Kike Salas to fire home a powerful half-volley in first-half stoppage time to draw level.
With the score level after the interval, Adams settled the contest in the 72nd minute after Alexis Sánchez won possession high up the pitch and Juanlu Sánchez and Sow combined to work the ball across for the Nigerian to strike.
The goal was Adams’ 10th in LaLiga this season, taking him into double figures in his full debut campaign in Spain. The 26-year-old has now registered 10 goals and four assists in 31 appearances across all competitions this season, with nine of his league goals coming from inside the penalty area and a conversion rate of 17 per cent.
Villarreal pushed for a late equaliser, but José Ángel Carmona preserved Sevilla’s lead with a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Pau Navarro in the closing stages. The result ended Sevilla’s run of four consecutive away defeats and moved them further clear of the relegation zone.
