Why Sports Are Critical to Learners’ Holistic Development

The Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende, has said sports remain critical to the holistic development of learners, describing school sports as a powerful tool for building discipline, teamwork and leadership among young people.

Ogunlende stated, according to a statement on Sunday, while attending the 24th Annual Inter-House Sports Competition of Dowen College, Lagos, where he served as the Guest of Honour.

The statement signed by Dowen College said the event was held at the Yabatech Sports Complex, Lagos.

“I am truly proud of the sportsmanship displayed by these young champions and their dedication to excellence and success.

“This event is yet another testament to the importance of continually contributing to sports development and the holistic growth of young people in Lagos State,” Ogunlende said.

He congratulated the Dowen College community for sustaining a strong culture of sports and youth development, noting that such initiatives align with the state government’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded future leaders.

In her welcome address, the Principal and Head of School, Dr Adebisi Layiwola, said the annual inter-house sports competition celebrates teamwork, excellence and the resilient spirit of the school community.

“Sports have always been an important part of education, teaching valuable life skills such as discipline, resilience, teamwork and determination.

“Beyond competition, sports help shape character and teach values of fairness, respect and perseverance,” Layiwola said.

She thanked Ogunlende for his support for youth development in Lagos State and commended parents for recognising the importance of sports in the all-round growth of their children.

Layiwola also acknowledged the presence of the school’s Sports Ambassador, Dr Adewale Teluwo, describing him as a passionate sports promoter whose contributions continue to inspire younger generations, particularly through grassroots football development.

She further appreciated the founder of Dowen College, Dr Olumide O. Phillips, his wife, Dr Toyin Phillips, members of the Advisory Council, the Chairman of the Board of Governors, Dr Taiwo Borisade, and other dignitaries for their continued support of the institution.

Addressing the students, Layiwola urged them to compete with integrity and pride, stressing that “true victory lies in the effort you put in, the camaraderie you build and the memories you create.”

At the end of the competition, Topaz House emerged overall winner with 26 gold, 19 silver and 21 bronze medals.

Sapphire House came second with 21 gold, 29 silver and 20 bronze medals, while Emerald House placed third with 21 gold, 26 silver and 17 bronze medals. Ruby House finished fourth with 17 gold, 11 silver and 24 bronze medals.

The event featured track and field contests and novelty games, drawing parents, alumni and education stakeholders, and reinforcing the role of school sports in youth development.
