Two people, an adult male and female, have died following a collision between two trucks at the Alamutu section of the Abeokuta–Igboora Expressway in Ogun State.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, told PUNCH Metro on Sunday that the accident occurred on Saturday.
According to an eyewitness, one of the trucks ran into a pothole, causing it to collide head-on with another oncoming vehicle. The combination of the impact and the speed of the trucks reportedly led to the fatalities.
Akinbiyi identified the vehicles involved as a white unregistered Volvo truck and an unregistered Cabstar mini truck.
“Both trucks were speeding, but the Cabstar truck ran into a pothole, lost control, and collided head-on with the other truck,” he said.
He added, “Four persons — three males and one female — were involved. Two people died, while the others escaped uninjured.
The presumed dead victims were removed from the Cabstar truck by their families for burial according to Islamic rites.”
The crash comes just days after a plywood-laden truck killed three pedestrians along the Tollgate area of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway. In that incident, TRACE reported that a Scania truck (registration number GGE 681 XD) suffered brake failure, colliding with another truck and pedestrians who were attempting to board a bus.
