The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has downplayed concerns arising from the Independent National Electoral Commission’s meeting with political party leaders, insisting that the commission cannot impose leadership on the party.
The party spoke in statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.
The PDP said the INEC invitation was extended to individuals it described as former members of the party “who are claiming to represent a National Caretaker Committee”, a body the party says is unknown to its constitution.
The party said INEC’s action was capable of causing tension and a breach of peace, but stressed that it would be addressed through lawful means.
Although it noted that the development was not unexpected, PDP expressed disappointment that the electoral body failed to take cognizance of pending cases before the Court of Appeal, including judgments being relied upon by the commission, which could substantially affect the matter.
“The expectation is that an impartial umpire would have exercised restraint, given the pendency of these cases,” the party stated, adding that INEC does not have the authority to determine or impose leadership on the PDP.
PDP urged its members nationwide to remain calm, assuring that the Court of Appeal would soon hear and determine all cases relating to the party’s leadership.
Reaffirming its internal cohesion, the PDP said its ongoing “Rebirth Movement” remains intact under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN. It expressed confidence that the party would overcome its current challenges.
The statement further noted that the party would emerge stronger and more united, positioning itself as a credible alternative to the ruling party, which it accused of inflicting hardship on Nigerians.
