The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified efforts to resolve its internal challenges, with the Board of Trustees (BoT) and the National Caretaker Committee reaffirming their commitment to party unity, respect for court rulings, and the completion of pending congresses ahead of a national convention.
Speaking at the party’s 85th Board of Trustees meeting in Abuja, BoT Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, said the PDP was at a decisive moment in its history and urged party leaders to place the interests of the party above personal ambitions.
He noted that although the PDP had endured months of internal disagreements and court cases relating to leadership disputes, the party remained intact due to its strong institutions and adherence to constitutional processes.
Ohuabunwa explained that the delay in holding party congresses was deliberate, stressing that the leadership had chosen to wait for legal clarity rather than act in a manner that could exacerbate the crisis.
“The PDP chose legality over expediency and patience over provocation,” he said, adding that the party’s respect for the rule of law would be seen positively in the long term.
He welcomed recent court rulings, particularly a judgment by the Federal High Court in Ibadan which upheld the Abdulrahman-led National Caretaker Committee, and urged party members to respect the courts and comply with all lawful decisions.
The BoT chairman also cautioned against statements or actions that could deepen divisions within the party, noting that the strength of the BoT lies in fairness, balance, and adherence to due process.
“With the legal uncertainty gradually clearing, attention must now turn to reconciliation, rebuilding confidence and organising credible congresses and a national convention,” Ohuabunwa said, describing unity as essential to the party’s survival.
In his address, Chairman of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed, thanked the BoT for its consistent support, saying it had helped maintain stability at a crucial time.
He also acknowledged the support of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, noting that it had encouraged the Caretaker Committee to remain focused on its task of repositioning the party.
Mohammed said the holiday period was over and that the time had come to take decisive steps to fulfil the committee’s mandate of restoring order within the PDP.
He confirmed that the Ibadan High Court had issued a declaratory judgment in favour of the Caretaker Committee, adding that the party would continue to rely on the law to resolve its disputes.
“Any moment from now, we shall roll out a timetable for activities relating to outstanding congresses in some states, which will usher in a seamless national convention,” he said.
The caretaker chairman described the PDP as a people-centred party with nationwide structures and a track record of governance, warning that the party must not become complacent.
He praised party leaders and supporters across the country for standing by the PDP during what he called a defining period for the opposition.
Both leaders expressed confidence that ongoing reconciliation efforts, planned congresses, and continued engagement with stakeholders would strengthen the PDP and position it as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape.
