A Special Adviser to Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, Sunusi Kwankwaso, has resigned his appointment following the governor’s resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party.
The development was disclosed in a video released on Friday by Sunusi’s media aide, Saifullahi Alhassan, on his Facebook page.
In the video, Sunusi said his decision was informed by reports that Governor Yusuf had exited the NNPP and was expected to defect to the All Progressives Congress , reportedly aligned with the Ganduje faction.
He explained that he had earlier submitted a resignation letter, but efforts to have it officially received were unsuccessful.
“After we got information that the governor has left the NNPP and there are expectations that he will join the APC, I submitted my resignation letter, but it was not accepted,” he said.
Sunusi added that the video was meant to formally announce his resignation as a political adviser.
“I also sent the letter to the office of the Secretary to the State Government, but it was refused,” he stated.
“I am making this video to publicly inform everyone that I have resigned my position as a political adviser. I appreciate the opportunity to serve and the work we did together over the past two years.”
He, however, ruled out joining the APC, reaffirming his loyalty to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya political movement.
“I will not betray Kwankwaso or the Kwankwasiyya movement. I remain with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and I will not join the APC,” he said.
The resignation comes amid heightened political tension in Kano State following Governor Yusuf’s exit from the NNPP, a development that has triggered resignations and realignments among party officials and government aides.
Kwankwaso is among the top NNPP leaders believed to remain aligned with the party’s national leadership.
PUNCH Online had earlier reported that Governor Yusuf resigned from the NNPP alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen in the state.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa.
Yusuf, in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area, formally communicated his decision to leave the party with effect from Friday, January 23, 2026.
