Algeria captain, Riyad Mahrez, has blamed Senegalese referee Issa Sy following his side’s AFCON quarter-final 2-0 loss to Nigeria on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Mahrez insisted that Sy was not perfect in his officiating during the encounter.
“I think the referee was not perfect, but that is not why we lost. We still have to mention it because it is football,” Mahrez said.
He added, “Today they are better; we have to shake their hands and be honest.”
Recall that supporters and players of the Algerian team claim they were denied a penalty during the match.
They accused Sy of being biased, alleging that several decisions went against them during the match, including a penalty incident in the first half.
