A viral video has captured the moment an aide to the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, gently stopped a woman from shaking the monarchโs hand in line with palace protocol.
In the 47-second clip that began trending on Tuesday, the Olu is seen walking through a lounge with members of his entourage dressed in traditional red and white Itsekiri attire when the woman stepped forward and stretched out her hand in greeting.
An aide promptly but politely intervened, preventing the gesture.
Under long-standing Itsekiri palace customs, subjects are not permitted to initiate physical contact with the Olu; any handshake must come at the monarchโs discretion.
Despite the brief interruption, the exchange remained cordial, with both the woman and the monarch smiling as protocol was observed.
Ogiame Atuwatse III, who ascended the throne in 2021 as the 21st Olu of Warri, is widely regarded for blending deep-rooted tradition with modern engagement. While known for his diplomatic outreach and global presence, he continues to uphold centuries-old Itsekiri customs within the palace.
