Members of Nigeria’s wheelchair basketball community have praised veteran player Musibau Shittu for organising a one-day mini tournament in Lagos aimed at keeping athletes active amid limited competitive opportunities.
The tournament, held at the National Institute for Sports, featured four teams and was organised through the FOLMUS Adaptive Sports Club founded by Shittu. The All Stars team emerged champions after edging FOLMUS 36–31 in a closely contested final.
Despite being based in France, where he plays professionally, Shittu followed the tournament via live streaming and addressed players after the final whistle. Participants described his involvement and financial support as a major boost for the sport.
Speaking after the event, FOLMUS manager Segun Bailey said the initiative showed how individual commitment could sustain wheelchair basketball in the country.
“This is about keeping the players active and united. We hope corporate organisations will come in so this can grow into something bigger,” Bailey said.
All Stars captain Kayode Ajibade said the competition helped players maintain fitness and motivation, while another participant, Abubakar Ridwan, described the event as a valuable assessment platform.
“This was a friendly competition to see how prepared we are. If more people support the sport the way Musibau Shittu does, things will improve,” he said.
Organisers confirmed plans are underway to make the tournament a regular event, subject to sponsorship and institutional backing.
