Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong endured a difficult outing as Al Kholood fell to a 2-0 defeat against 10-man Al Taawoun in their Saudi Pro League Matchday 10 clash on Friday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Saudi Pro League resumed after a break of over a month, with Al Kholood hosting Al Taawoun at the Al-Hazem Club Stadium.
The hosts were eager to halt a four-game losing streak but fell behind in the 22nd minute when Christopher Mendez opened the scoring for the visitors.
Despite Al Taawoun being reduced to 10 men, Al Kholood were unable to find a way back into the contest.
Their hopes of getting any points from the game were dashed in the 75th minute when Troost-Ekong inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, effectively sealing the result.
It was Troost-Ekong’s second own goal of the season, following a similar incident on October 30 in a 3-2 loss to NEOM SC.
The defeat leaves Al Kholood 12th on the league table, and they will now look to bounce back when they face title contenders Al Hilal in their next fixture.
Earlier this month, the former Super Eagles captain announced his retirement from international football after a decade of service, citing a desire to focus on club football and personal pursuits.
