The Jigawa State Government has announced that the tenure of 27 selected Education Secretaries will be subject to a one-year performance review, with underperforming officers to be replaced.
The Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Prof. Haruna Musa, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the final selection exercise.
He explained that the appointments followed a rigorous, multi-stage process designed to ensure competence and professionalism.
According to him, about 1,156 candidates applied for the position, after which 274 were shortlisted, 159 passed a computer-based test, 88 candidates were invited for the final interview, and 27 were ultimately selected.

Prof. Haruna noted that the appointments are performance-based, after which the officers will be reassessed after one year, with underperforming secretaries replaced.
He said the new strategy reflects Governor Umar Namadi’s desire to bring reforms to the education sector, particularly at the basic level.
“Education secretaries are strong pillars in the sector; therefore, if you have someone who is competent, definitely we will see the changes we are looking for,” he said.
He urged the successful applicants to justify the confidence reposed in them by ensuring effective school monitoring and the timely reporting of accurate data to support informed decision-making.
