The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has begun a crackdown on drivers across the state who engage in speeding and endanger their lives and those of other road users, particularly during the festive season.
The spokesperson for the sector command, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, disclosed this in a statement sent to journalists on Wednesday.
Odunsi-Oyewole disclosed that the special operation, led by the State Sector Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, is aimed at achieving the corps’ corporate goal of a 10 per cent reduction in road crashes in the state, most of which have been attributed to speeding.
He explained that during an operation carried out along the Sagamu–Abeokuta Road, Fasakin and his team apprehended 16 drivers for speeding using a laser radar gun and subsequently booked them for traffic offences.
Odunsi-Oyewole said, “In a bid to achieve the 2025 Corporate Strategic Goal 1, which aims to achieve a 10 per cent reduction in road crashes through focused interventions, the Ogun State Command of the FRSC, after identifying the major cause of crashes in the state as speeding, has launched a special operation to combat this worrisome development.
“The Sector Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, led the special intervention patrol along the Sagamu–Abeokuta Road and was accompanied by the Head of Operations.
“The laser radar gun was used to apprehend drivers for speeding offences, and speed-limiting devices were fixed in the offenders’ vehicles. Sixteen offenders were booked for speeding violations.”
Meanwhile, the sector commander has urged motorists to obey traffic rules and avoid the dangers of speeding and overloading, while prioritising safety at all times on the road.
Fasakin also assured residents of the state of a safe motoring environment.
Odunsi-Oyewole added that the special intervention patrol would continue throughout the Yuletide season.
